Aqua Blue Marian L Thomas Books Reviews
I love Aqua Blue. It was an amazing story. It was a simple story but beautifully written and you really learn to love the three main characters named Aqua Blue, Johnathan, and Haley. It is the story of three small town kids who takes a bus ride to follow their dreams in New York. Aqua Blue wants to be a singer but also find out about the mystery of her blue eyes. Johnathan wants to be a doctor but is also running away from a past that he cannot go back to. Haley wants to be a dancer but has a big secret that she hides from her best friend Aqua Blue that nearly ends that childhood friendship. It is an amazing story that especially a small town kid who have dreams of leaving the dullness of small time life and dreaming of making it in the Big Apple could relate too. This story has been told a million times but this one was so well done. There is even a hidden story in between about love and race that will make you smile. I actually got to meet the author of the book club and she was really an awesome woman and even gave me advice on how to accomplish my dream of one day becoming a writer one day. This story is very positive. There is no derogatory language or no N word, and the characters are not stereotypes. They are simply human beings. Thomas informed us that she likes to write stories that you would not be ashamed to be caught reading like a Zane novel, a romance novel, or even the Fifty Shades of Grey series. This is a great story, the author is a wonderful woman, and I can't wait to read more of her novels. My next choice is Color Me Jazzmyne from her Naya Mona Series!
Wow! I really like stories like this because they draw me back into a time when I was young in a very bitter-sweet way. Coming from a small town, the main character's desire to leave her small town and explore the big city felt very natural and real. The author did a good job of evoking real emotions and the look and feel of the time and place from the very first page.
I also thought the author did a good job with her dialog - it flowed naturally and realistically. The story is still quite relevant to our own modern lives too. Aqua Blue is a satisfying read, and it is artfully broken into quick chapters. I kept reading and thinking I just wanted to find out what happened next.
Honestly, I also like the fact that Ms. Thomas can realistically explore themes like friendship, family, relationships, and love - the good and the bad - without resorting to "adult" scenes. Even though this story explores mature themes, it is still a clean and family friendly story. I would recommend this book for adults, but also for mature teens.
In the end - it is a satisfying romance too.
I got this book for free after seeing it on the Buffett list. I did not know the author and I had no expectations other than it seemed like a story that might interest me. The bones of this book definitely have the makings of a great novel, however the story was diminished by editing and drafting issues which were distracting. The story also got lost because the author was trying too hard to be deep and/or emulate descriptive prose. For example while trying to describe that the character was crying and those tears had been repressed for a long time, the writer wrote something about tears coming out of her eyes like an ocean. Or trying to describe that a character had a feeling she felt deeply, but describing the feeling as something that the character felt in her kidneys?? The phrasing didn't work and it was sometimes quite frustrating to read.
The gist of the Book is Simone (Aqua Blue - called so because she is mixed race girl with aqua blue eyes that do not match either of her parents) has been starved for attention in her home for so long that she longs to leave JAckson County, TN to move to NYC to start a singing career. Simone's best friend Haley (who is white), longs to escape her physically abusive and drunken father, and fulfill her dream to become a ballet dancer (unbeknowst to Aqua Blue or anyone else). Jonathan Brown (a mixed race child) from Barrow County, TN (neighboring County to Jackson) has had to endure his step-father's abuse of his mother (Loretta Mae) and she makes him flee to NYC to find an estranged aunt (Charlotte Rae) so that she can kill herself and the abusive husband. Simone, Haley and Jonathan leave TN on the same Greyhound bus, and then the story revolves around what happens to them once they make it to NYC.
